Process Characterization for Thermal BC

To model an heat treating process more accurately, proper thermal boundary conditions should be applied accordingly. Quantified thermal boundary conditions are valuable information for not just computer modeling, but also understanding and trouble shooting a specific process and equipment. The quantified thermal boundary conditions can cover heating equipment, quenching equipment, and tempering equipment, etc. With these equipment quantified, The furnace time for heating and quenching time can be optimized.

Part (probe) with embedded Thermocouples are often recommended to characterize the equipment for thermal boundary conditions. In general, multiple thermocouples in the part are needed to find a unique solution (heat transfer coefficient). An example of part with embedded thermocouple are shown in the figure below.
